Work work work work work

Unless you’ve been at uni for a while (third year or more), then chances are that you have probably never heard of the term Work Integrated Learning (WIL). These are units that you can take in your final year of study and allow you to get work experience through an internship, project or study tour*. Because after all, QUT is the university for the real world!

I study Business AND Creative Industries which means that I get two of these awesome units which both count towards my degrees. I used one of these last semester and went on the Mumbrella 360 Media and Communication study tour to Sydney. And it was amazing! So here are three reasons to go on a study tour.

  • You get to visit some really cool organisations. Some of the ones I went to include News Corp Australia, SBS and BuzzFeed!

2

  • You get to meet real industry people and make connections with bigwigs who may be your future employers

4

  • The assessment is pretty easy! I had to do a group presentation before we left, 5 x 400 word blog posts while I was down there and 1000-word essay when I got back

*Check your study plan as not all courses offer WIL as part of the degree. However, you may be eligible to choose a study tour as an elective.

Relax, it’s Stress Down Day!

Our students bloggers share how they stress down during the busy times of semester for #StressDownDay. Do you have any tips for keeping calm?

AnaAna

Student blogger Ana nails her #StressDownDay like a pro. All the LDI and College of Excellence workshops that she has attended during the semester taught her to harness stress. She says “Take a deep breath, identify your level of tension and think of the things you are in control of. Exactly! You are in control of your own emotions. Now, take a break from the stress and enjoy life for a second, it will calm you down.”

Student blogger Sean says, “Gettin’ down with stressin’ down doesn’t come any better in winter than a fluffy pair of socks and your favourite slippers … nobody can see them under your study desk too.” #slippersandsocksrocks #justbreathe

Student blogger Racquel has given us her top two #StressDownDay tips for staying cool, calm and collected.

Student Blogger Racquel captured this shot of our Gardens Point campus after completing her last exam for the semester. It’s a reminder of all the hard work she put in during the semester, and how she made it through the busy times. There’s nothing better than being able to say “Goodbye assessment, hello holidays”!

Racquel

What’s the perfect cure for a stressed uni student who loves to travel? Mini road trips! Student blogger Racquel decided to bundle up her worries about exams, pack her camera in her car, top up the fuel tank and bring her Mum along for a mini road trip through Kilcoy, Mount Mee, Dayboro and surrounding areas.

Playing limbo: my transition into QUT from highschool.

I was fresh, straight from high school, an excited young girl ready to take on free dress every day as a new university student! (Yes, I was excited about the free dress – where unlike in school – it actually was free to wear non-uniform – instead of a gold coin donation).

My first day of uni was the most outrageous, funny day. I caught the train into uni and waddled my way through the city to the lovely Garden’s Point Campus. The array of tents and stalls that crowded the pavements at the entrance was an exciting sight to behold.
There were people everywhere! And they were chanting “freebies” and “prizes”. I thought this was incredible.

Sun’s out, fun’s out! Why you should go to QUT Caboolture orientation.

The sun was out. The car park was full. Cars were parked all the way up the street. I was starting to think that it would have been quicker to walk from home. The Caboolture campus is usually pretty quiet during the semester. So why all the commotion? Two words: O-Week! Read more
