For most of you, this news would not come as a surprise. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been counting the days. Final exams are well underway, and for a small amount of lucky people such as myself, I only have one left
to worry about.
Just yesterday I was on facebook, scrolling through my news feed and lazily scanning the page for anything interesting. I started to stumble across a few posts that all went something like, “I only need 12% to pass this unit!” or “it doesn’t matter how I go on my exam…I’ve already passed the unit”.
It’s that time of semester when everyone starts to get a little lazy (yes, I’ve been on facebook way too much), and the holidays are so close everyone can almost taste them. So we pack it in and give ourselves a pat on the back, realising that we only need only this tiny percentage to pass our units. But is that really all we should aim for at university? A scrape in pass to make ourselves feel better? I thought about it and asked myself did I get to a place like this and aim for a pass when I know (nine out of ten times) I can do better?
Uni isn’t supposed to be easy, at least in my [first year] experience. It’s meant to be challenging, otherwise there isn’t much to learn from it. While a pass is nothing to be ashamed about, it’s silly to dismiss the thought of getting a credit or a distinction. One of my lecturers often says “Confidence in all things”, and I’m beginning to discover what that means for me. Reach for the moon and if you miss you’ll land amongst the stars; while if you aim for a tree and miss you’ll almost certainly hit the ground.
But what if I do hit the ground? is a question that may be running through your head now as you think back on past exams or results. All I can say to that is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. As I said earlier uni is meant to be a challenging experience, and if mistakes weren’t made then there would be little to learn from.
It’ll be a time of celebration when I hand in my exam paper, knowing I have completed my last piece of assessment for the semester. I don’t even know how much I need to pass my unit, but I have a feeling it’s better I don’t.
Best of luck to all the people studying for their exams, your well-earned holidays are just around the corner 🙂
