O-Week Madness

Heeerrreee’s MELISSA!
Yep, I’m back.

With uni just around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to do a round-up of all the awesome things happening during Orientation Week that you may not be aware of!

Sports and Clubs Sign-Ups are happening basically all throughout the week, so if you’re passionate about sport, a hobby or just want to make new friends, go along and join a club!  Sign-ups are open at Gardens Point along the Main Drive from 11am-3pm Monday & Tuesday and at Kelvin Grove from 11am-3pm in the Amphitheatre on Wednesday.

The most epic of epic events during O-Week would have to be the….

UQ vs. QUT World’s Largest Toga Party!

I had to put that one in huge letters because it’s, in my opinion, the coolest event during Orientation.
QUT and UQ are teaming up to beat the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest toga party, which means over 2,000 people have to be there in order to beat the record. Insane!  Even Fuzzy from Video Hits is going to be there, so you know this is going to be one O-Week event you can’t miss out on.  It’s happening on Friday the 24th of Feb, so you’d better hurry up and buy your tickets while you still can!  More information can be found on the Facebook event page.

If you’re into slightly more quirky events, why not go to the Silent Dance Party? You’ll be given a headset to listen to so you can bust out moves to your favourite song without anyone knowing and with special effects, DJs, live music and visual artistry involved, it sounds like it’s going to be a very fun night! It kicks off from 4pm on Thursday the 23rd of Feb and entry is $15.

Experience Australiana is perfect for those of you who want to have a good ol’ fashioned Aussie night out.  Start out the night with a presentation by Geckoes Wildlife who will no doubt have many cute Australian animals for you to meet.  Afterwards you can ‘throw a shrimp on the barbie’ at the Bush BBQ with a live band.  And what better way to end the night with a bush dance with a hip-hop twist!  It starts from 3pm at C Block, Kelvin Grove on Wednesday the 22nd of Feb and best of all, it’s free!

East West Eats Dinner Groups is a great way of finding the best places in Brisbane to hang out and enjoy a great meal.  Held regularly throughout the semester, you can meet up with both domestic and international students and bond over delicious food and drink.  The first dinner will be held on Monday the 20th of Feb from 5pm-8pm.

Do you love the movie Crackerjack?  Well you’re going to love Barefoot Bowling! And no, this isn’t ten-pin bowling.  This is 100% awesome grass bowls!  It’s ok if you don’t know how to play, there will be plenty of people on the day to show you how to rock at it.  Who knows? You might turn out to be a champion bowls master.  It’s free for new students and $10 for continuing students and will be held on Tuesday the 21st of Feb 1.30pm-5pm.

If you’re over 18, the Guild Bar will be hosting some great events…

Gardens Point Guild Bar

Unlawful Law Faculty Night – Monday 27th of Feb, 6pm
Around The World International Night – Tuesday 28th of Feb, 6pm
It’s Business Time Business Faculty Night – Wednesday 29th of Feb, 6pm
Meme Party Science & Technology Faculty Night – Thursday 1st of March, 6pm

Kelvin Grove Guild Bar
Social Sports Launch Party – Tuesday 28th of Feb, 6pm
Universe (QUT Magazine) Launch Party – Wednesday 29 February, 6pm
Colleges Exchange – Thursday 1 March, 6pm

So there you have it.  Now you have no excuse to stay at home during Orientation Week.  Get out there and do something fun!
I hope to see you guys at some of these events!
