All in this together: tips for using library spaces

students in library spaces KGExam period is right around the corner. By now, you need to be starting to think about your approach to exam preparation. Using library spaces and rooms might be part of your strategy – we think it’s a good one!

The library offers study spaces of different types – for study groups, for conversation and collaboration, for topping up your power supply or time to study on your own. Whatever your needs – on the floor, in a room, at a desk or on a couch, you’ll likely find your ideal study space. Rooms are available for bookings made in advance of your study sessions.

Exam stress is real and you don’t need any extra when you’re trying to concentrate on exam revision. When using spaces in the library, particularly the collaborative zones, it’s a good idea to exercise a little consideration for your peers. Many of you will have exams and so many of you will be in the same boat – all in this together.

We’ve come up with some top tips for being a considerate peer in library spaces during exam preparation and exam period:

  • Try not to listen to loud music. Instead, bring some earphones.
  • You may like to bring a meal or snacks into the library. Totally fine with us! But maybe don’t be the student who brings the smelly or over-powering food.
  • Don’t sit at a desk with a computer when you’re not using it. Another student might need it.
  • Don’t put laptop cords across walkways. This causes a trip hazard. Not cool.
  • Return library books on time. And this includes the course reserve items. Don’t be a scrooge!
  • Planning when and where you’re going to study? Luckily, Gardens Point Library will again be extending opening hours during the study and exam period. From the 28th October until 10pm on 18th November the library will be open from 7am – 2am Monday to Friday and 9am – 2am on the weekends. There are ample study times for you to choose from, yay!

Exam preparation tips

exam80a9aIt’s coming around to that time again – exams! Students from across all faculties take exams so we’ve put together some quick tips for you to do the best you can in your final assessments.

What do you need to know?

You can’t take your exam if you don’t know where the room is or what you need to bring. Make sure you check your unit Blackboard site as well as your exam timetable on QUT Virtual for any last minute changes.

Once you know the date of your exam you can start your plan of attack. Set aside some time each day to study, making sure to take regular breaks. You might like to use this exam study planner to help.

Study actively! This means don’t just read your textbook but make notes, use a highlighter, draw pictures, or make flash cards. Take a look at this exam preparation tip sheet for more ideas.

Remember exam preparation is not just about knowing the content, it is about knowing the type of questions you will be asked and managing your time to get the best result.

Getting over that final hurdle : Exam Prep

It’s that time of year again, when the end of the year is so close you can almost touch it, but before you can really relax, you have to deal with the dreaded final exams. We wouldn’t blame you if you felt like doing this:

But before you do, remember that the end is in sight, and before you know it, you’ll be kicking back on the beach, exams a distant memory. Here are a few hints for avoiding stress and getting through the final weeks of semester.

The easiest way to avoid (or manage) stress in these final weeks is to have a study plan and gather all the important information (such as date, time & location of your exam) as soon as possible so that it doesn’t cause unnecessary panic the night before or the morning of.

Some study tips to help you prepare in the days and weeks before your exam include:

  • Take advantage of the revision questions at the end of chapters in your textbook (if available);
  • Be active, not passive. Avoid just reading over your notes or textbook – highlight, underline, rewrite or create concept maps instead;
  • Revise regularly, not just a couple of days or the day before. The more you revise, the easier it becomes to remember;
  • Make mnemonics (words or sentences to help you remember), charts or flash cards;
  • Eliminate distractions;
  • Chunk your time, and take regular breaks;
  • Write your own exam questions and swap them with a friend.

On the day of your exam:

  • Get to your exam early, and ensure you’ve got the right materials with you, including your student card;
  • Use any perusal time to identify questions you can answer easily and answer these first;
  • Read all questions at least twice;
  • Leave plenty of time to review at the end.
