International Cat Day

For some of us, International Cat Day is the most important day of observance in the calendar. Okay, religious observances, birthdays, anniversaries and other important milestones may trump it, but it’s still important. Just like the millions of cat videos that are streamed daily on millions of devices the world over. The world would be a sadder place without them 😹

International Cat Day was started in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare which works to rescue individual animals, safeguard populations, preserve habitat, and advocate for greater protections. Interestingly, they did not start National Dog Day (26 August – look out for a blog post about that one closer to the time 😊)

Those furry felines who have captured our hearts and attention are very popular in library land, with a large majority of library staff caring for these purring bundles of joy (can you tell I’m a cat lover 😻). Some libraries even have a library cat (we can’t have one at QUT Library, I’ve checked 😿) which many of the patrons look forward to seeing on their library visits.

While we can’t have a living, breathing fuzzy feline friend here at QUT Libraries, we do have an excellent art exhibit which lives on level 7 at Gardens Point Library.

We also have resources (videos, books, audiobooks, journals, articles, plus more) related to and about cats as well. Check it out today

Here are some of the cute cats your QUT Library staff share their homes with.

Meow, it’s International Cat Day!

cat-and-book-975572_1280International Cat Day is dedicated to a librarian’s best friend, our furry hot water bottles and companions, cats! It is a day for pampering your own cat or even the neighbourhood ones and recognising the impact they have made on our own lives and society as one of the most popular pets in the world.  Not only have cats been loving pets for many a millennium, the Ancient Egyptians worshipped our feline friends, they have also been known to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and improve mental health, yay cats!

To spur on your own worship of cats today, here are some interesting kitty facts

  1. A group of kittens is called a kindle, because book lovers needed another reason to love kittens! A group of cats is called a clowder.
  2. Cats have been to space! The first cat to be such a high achiever was Felicette in 1963. Her name is French for Astrocat.
  3. Cats can make over 100 vocal sounds, talk about purring machines.
  4. A male cat is called a Tom and a female cat is called a Molly or a Queen which sounds about right!
  5. When cats are happy or pleased they squeeze their eyes shut, awwww!

cat-984097_1280QUT Library has lots of cat related resources including online movies and documentaries. So if you’re feeling the love for cats why not watch The Cat Returns, an anime that takes you into the fantastical world of cats. Or if you want to learn more about our furry companions have a look at The Secret Life of Cats. You can find more cat videos by searching for “cats” in the How to find – Videos and DVDs search box.

So make sure you stock up catnip and string and bust out your best cat sweater or cats eye sunglasses because Monday 8th August is all about cats! And, if you’re a dog lover, don’t get catty, National Dog day is just around the corner on August 26th.
