QUT Library Wins GIF IT UP 2016!

Recently, QUT Library submitted our very own GIFs into the annual GIF IT UP competition. We were tasked with creating a sweet GIF from a piece of copyright-free material from DPLA, Europeana, Trove or DigitalNZ collections.

For QUT Library’s submission we chose a beautiful picture of the Moreton Bay Lighthouse that can be found in QUT Library’s Digital Collections. We created three amazing GIFs from the one photo, talk about wow!

Not only are these GIFs fantastic but we also won! Congratulations to the wonderful staff who contributed to the innovated and creative gifs that have put QUT Library on the GIF map! We were awarded the Trove Librarian Grand Prize by the Trove Judges who had this to say about the entries –

“These 3 GIFs together tell a story like no other entry ever has. It was utterly unexpected and delightful.”

More feedback from the judges and the rest of the winning GIFs can be seen on the DPLA website. And all the gif submissions are on GIF IT UP 2016. Do you have a favourite GIF from the competition? Let us know by leaving us a comment!

Remembrance Day

The 11th of November marks the anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War. Each year on this day, a minute’s silence is observed at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts (Australian War Memorial).

The red Flanders poppy is the symbol of remembrance that commemorates the First World War. Wild red poppies flourished in churned up mud and soil in the battlefields of the Western Front during the war. In 1921, the red Flanders poppy became the British Legion’s official emblem. Today, red poppies feature in sprays and wreaths laid at memorials, at memorial services and military cemeteries. Cloth poppies are worn in memory respect of those who gave their lives.

Available through the QUT Library, this documentary, Not Forgotten, presents individual stories from the First World War and unlocks “the experience and the legacy of the Great War on a personal, family, community and national level, and ensuring that 90 years later, these names are not forgotten.”

We will remember them. Lest we forget.
