On Friday, February 16, a team of four QUT students boarded an international flight to swap Brisbane’s heatwave for the Montreal snow. Brodie Wilson, Bec Colbrook, Elliott Flowers and myself were set to represent QUT at the John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition (JMUCC), hosted by Concordia University, Montreal.
I first heard of QUT’s Business Advantage Program during my undergraduate orientation. Whilst undertaking my studies at the Business School, I have always been motivated to build a variety of professional and social skills. As a result, I was drawn to engage in a co-curricular activity that embraces the development of these skills.
When I told people that I would be spending my weekend – both entire days, Saturday and Sunday! – doing university-related things instead of enjoying the sub-Summer temperatures like the rest of Brisbane, many people told me that something must’ve been wrong or I needed the extra credit.
As an international student doing the Master in Business with a major in Strategic Advertising at QUT, I can say that enrolling in the project unit has been one of the most enriching academic experiences I have had in Australia. The QUT Economics and Finance Society (EFS) is a student run social club aimed at engaging and connecting students, in particular, but not limited to those studying Economics or Finance. EFS aims to inform, inspire and incorporate its members into the real world through professional workshops, extensive networking events and educational seminars. Ultimately, EFS aims to position its members effectively for future employment.
The time at Hong Kong went by very fast and the next and final stop of our Dragon 100 trip was China.
We visited two completely different cities in China: Qian hai and Xi’an. Qian hai is a very modern city close to Hong Kong and the main industry of this city is its harbour industry. On the other hand, Xi’an, one of the oldest cities in China, has rich and culturally significant history.
When I began my public relations major at the start of this year, I was a bit nervous (to say the least). I had made the leap in blindly changing from marketing, with fingers crossed that I would thrive within the PR sphere. A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the 2016 University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Attended by over 700 delegates from 69 countries, USLS aimed to ‘provide the next generation of leaders with a vision of how to distinguish themselves as future leaders of the 21st century.’ The symposium truly did achieve everything it set out to do and much more. Being lucky enough to say I have already visited Hong Kong twice before, I like to think I know exactly what to expect no matter what I may face in the bustling city. Whether it is the never-ending wave of people and cars, yelling and beeping at each other or the amazing lights, food and culture. I thought I had seen everything Hong Kong had to offer.
Returning back to our old friend, Hotel Jen, for an industry visit was a great way to finish the Hong Kong leg of our QUT advertising and public relations study tour. Marisa Aranha, Vice President Sales and Marketing for Hotel Jen, provided a detailed insight into the creative branding of Hotel Jen (a rebrand for many of the Traders hotels) in 2014, and the subsequent launch of the new brand into the global market.
After experiencing #thatjenfeeling during the beginning days of our study tour, we were able to view the key objectives set out for Hotel Jen’s brand through our own experience. The objectives of the brand were met, and exceeded all our expectations spectacularly.
