Enactus QUT #createwelcome

At the Southbank parklands, hundreds of people held scores of lanterns, illuminating the night sky at MDA’s Luminous Lantern Parade last Friday night – and Enactus QUT was among them.

At its 11th annual parade, Enactus QUT was invited to walk among leading organisations at the Luminous Lantern Parade to highlight the strength of Queensland’s cultural diversity, heritage, people, places, and history, while giving all Queenslanders the opportunity to say ‘welcome’ to our newest Australians.

QUTChangemakers

On May 10, Enactus QUT achieved an enormous milestone which was QUTChangemakers, QUT’s first social entrepreneurship competition by Enactus QUT.

As President of Enactus QUT, I sought to seek a new way in which Enactus QUT functioned – taking student engagement and retainment to a new level and to create a social-entrepreneurially-minded community within QUT. And last night we accomplished just that.

At the beginning of semester, we challenged students to be a QUTChangemaker through our program and competition by creating sustainable social enterprises that addressed issues we face within our own community. Unlike a regular startup weekend, this competition went for 10 weeks and sought to create direct impact by seeing ideas mature and become a reality.

The Unknown Project’s foundation in Enactus QUT

One of my favourite poems is ‘The Summer Day’, by American poet Mary Oliver. It reads:

Oliver asks a critical, existential question: in a world of such remarkable beauty, who are we to be of any significance? But of course, as she says, you must be, but never without perspective. Oliver’s outlook demonstrates a kind of empowering empathy, in a world that can often feel overpoweringly apathetic.

Enactus presents Taste of Brisbane

On the 10th of October, Taste of Brisbane launched its first food tour of the semester at the delicious Afghani restaurant, Chopan Charcoal, located in Milton. Here, accompanied by 30+ guests, we were immersed in the owner’s culture and heritage while marvelling at the delicious morsels of food that continually filled our plates. At the price of $26 per person, the event proved to be great value for money as guests quickly became full with the steady flow of food making its way to our tables.

Enactus Australia National Competition

Over three days, fourteen universities from across Australia competed at the Enactus National Competition. Hosted at the Sofitel Hotel in Sydney, each university vied for the chance to represent Australia at the Enactus World Cup in Toronto, Canada later this year.

Each university presented the projects they completed on social entrepreneurship throughout the previous year, bringing attention to key issues throughout Australian society and how they were effecting social change.

Eleven members from Enactus QUT attended the competition; three incredible presenters, eight support staff and the amazing Marvin Fox as Faculty Advisor. It was the culmination of not only weeks of competition preparation, but of the projects Enactus QUT had completed throughout 2016.

The Opportunity of a Lifetime at Start-up Weekend Brisbane – Creative Tech

From the 18th till the 20th of March, the Glasshouse at Kelvin Grove hosted Australia’s first creative tech start-up weekend. As participants pitched their initial ideas on the Friday, excitement was high in anticipation of the voting and team formations to take place later that evening.

I voted and became apart of the team for Shario – a platform for musicians to share, sell and trade musical equipment, providing a solution for musicians to gain access to otherwise extremely expensive equipment.
