I was a #MyriadMate with backstage access

Gather around, gather around!

For the low price of four minutes of your life, I offer you backstage access to the hottest party in town. Yes, yes, you guessed right, Myriad. “How?” You may ask, good sir. Through my Myriad mate eyes. Now that I’ve lured you in with my miracle – insert product – pitch, let me start from the beginning and tell you how I became a #MyriadMate, and got into the position of nominating myself to write this blog.

Venturer Mission III — An incredible personal and professional development program

The mission

I recently had the privilege of completing an incredible development program called Venturer Mission III. The mission unfolded in the picturesque landscapes of Queenstown New Zealand and saw participants hiking wilderness trails, climbing mountains, pack rafting river rapids, and swimming in freezing glacial lakes. To say the least, this was a once in a lifetime adventure!

QUTChangemakers

On May 10, Enactus QUT achieved an enormous milestone which was QUTChangemakers, QUT’s first social entrepreneurship competition by Enactus QUT.

As President of Enactus QUT, I sought to seek a new way in which Enactus QUT functioned – taking student engagement and retainment to a new level and to create a social-entrepreneurially-minded community within QUT. And last night we accomplished just that.

At the beginning of semester, we challenged students to be a QUTChangemaker through our program and competition by creating sustainable social enterprises that addressed issues we face within our own community. Unlike a regular startup weekend, this competition went for 10 weeks and sought to create direct impact by seeing ideas mature and become a reality.

However, I thought it would enhance my international business acumen as part of my degree, so I went for it! It did exactly that and so, so much more!

The culture shock is real

I remember how I felt when my flight landed in Australia for the first time. It was actually a feeling of numbness, where I did not know what to expect. Neither a feeling of excitement nor anxiety but a feeling of nothingness. To be honest, I was very overconfident to feel that I will settle in easily and quicker than other students. But I was completely wrong. I don’t mention it to freak everyone, but it happens and we need to prepare ourselves to deal with that kind of emotion. How do we prepare ourselves for a ‘culture shock’? We have to embrace it and work on it. I know! It’s easier said than done. When I went through it, I didn’t even realize that it was a culture shock. I saw it as being moody, as we all are I am sure, however, it wasn’t the case really.
