Student Club: QUT Starters

Heard words like startups or innovation but not sure what the fuss is about? Got an idea but not sure what to do next? Want to make more of your degree and work on something cool which is more than a uni project? Even if you don’t have a startup idea and you are just interested in the entrepreneurial community – QUT Starters is for you.

QUT starters

QUT Starters is a student-run society connecting innovative students who want to put their studies into action through entrepreneurship.

We aim to springboard students into the world of startups by connecting them with industry professionals and hosting professional workshops, extensive networking events and educational seminars. Our role is to provide you with opportunities to network with serial entrepreneurs, form teams, receive feedback, and resources to help you grow. Some of our biggest events that allow students to be involved in the startup scene include Startup Hatch and Disrupting Law.

In early 2016, we supported and guided 19 startups to get from idea to reality in 31 days through our program called Startup Hatch. Startup Hatch is back for 2017, where will be supporting up to 20 different ideas through our intensive program. The final day of Startup Hatch, the Showcase, is where the teams pitch their developed idea to a panel of high profile industry professionals. This is no startup weekend. This is no hackathon. Hatch is a massive opportunity to be surrounded by prolific mentors, learn from those who have gone through it before, and work on your own start up. There is also the possibility for micro-funding and a chance at substantial funding for the winning team. If you are interested in seeing how Startup Hatch turns ideas into reality, grab tickets to this year’s showcase on the 17 of August!

Disrupting Law is a 54-hour innovation workshop meets ‘Shark Tank’ competition. QUT Starters teamed up with The Legal Forecast to host the first weekend of its kind, designed to tackle real world problems faced in the legal profession through innovation and collaboration. Each team is mentored by a partner from a high profile law firm in Brisbane. After brainstorming, forming, validating, prototyping and building a business model, each team pitches their idea to a panel of judges and guests at the finale event. Last year’s winning team, ‘Speak with Scout’ is an online legal chat-bot that locates potential clients through API. The team from Speak to Scout are now in Melbourne, taking part in an Accelerator Program run by Mills Oakley and Collective Campus. Due to its success, Disrupting law will be run again in August 2017 – so if you are interest in disrupting the legal world, join us.

We also hold more relaxed networking events for people who are interested in talking to like-minded students. Who doesn’t like making new mates over beers and burritos? No matter what educational background you have, startups are a community that bring people together to the common goal of wanting to create change through new ideas. QUT Starters provide endless opportunities for students to talk about their ideas and receive feedback in a safe environment with like-minded people. In our experience, confidence to exert the belief in yourself and belief in your idea is central to connecting with people and progressing in this scene.

We are open to all students’ staff, alumni, faculties and other interested parties. So if you’re keen to meet some new people, have a few beers and find your inner entrepreneur, then this is for you.  Check out our website, or check out our Facebook page where you’ll find updates on our upcoming events!
